Only a few years ago, if you watched a video on the internet, television, or your phone, you could say with almost complete certainty that what you were seeing was real. Video footage was widely considered solid evidence of an event that had actually taken place.
What is a depfake? A deepfake is a digitally manipulated video, image, or audio recording created with artificial intelligence that makes it appear as if a real person said or did something that never actually happened.
Today, that certainty has largely disappeared. The rapid development of artificial intelligence has reached a point where even sophisticated computer algorithms struggle to determine what is real and what is fabricated. For the average person, distinguishing truth from manipulation has become even more difficult. As a result, many people are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated digital deception.
In the age of artificial intelligence, it is now possible for almost anyone to create highly convincing videos from their own home computer.
In these recordings, famous actors, politicians, elite athletes, Hollywood celebrities, or even an ordinary neighbor can appear to say words they never spoke or perform actions they never did. The goal is often simple: deceive viewers and exploit the natural trust people place in visual information.
This form of digital manipulation is known as deepfake technology, and its growth has been explosive. In only a few years, the number of such videos circulating online has increased from hundreds of thousands to millions.
However, the greatest problem may not lie in the videos themselves, but in the human mind and its susceptibility to manipulation. Deepfakes are effective because they exploit psychological weaknesses: our instinctive trust in visual evidence, our attraction to sensational information, and the emotional reactions that encourage people to share shocking content quickly. At the intersection of technology and human psychology, a new era of digital manipulation has emerged.

The First Viral Deepfake Videos and the Origin of the Term
The first widely known deepfake video appeared on the internet in late 2017. It was published by an anonymous user on the platform Reddit under the pseudonym “deepfakes.” The name of the technology itself was later derived from this username.
One of the first well-known deepfake videos anonymously posted online was a pornographic clip in which the face of actress Daisy Ridley, best known for playing Rey in the Star Wars series, was digitally inserted onto another performer’s body.
The same user also created an online community where manipulated videos produced using deep learning techniques were shared. In those early experiments, the process usually involved digitally placing one person’s face onto another person’s body in an existing video. The result created the illusion that a well-known public figure was performing actions or speaking words that never actually occurred.
Among the most viral examples were manipulated pornographic videos in which the faces of celebrities were digitally placed onto the bodies of adult film performers. Early deepfake clips also featured actresses such as Gal Gadot, Scarlett Johansson, and Emma Watson.

Those early attempts were far from perfect. Compared to modern deepfakes, they often contained visible errors such as unnatural lip movements, flickering skin textures, or inconsistent lighting. Even so, despite their technical flaws, they were convincing enough to attract widespread media attention.
It is worth noting that video and face manipulation techniques existed long before 2017. In the film industry, especially in Hollywood, visual effects artists had been experimenting with digital face replacement and CGI for years. What changed in 2017 was accessibility.
The turning point came with tools such as FakeApp, FaceSwap, and DeepFaceLab, which allowed almost anyone with an ordinary computer to create manipulated videos. These tools opened the door to the mass production of convincing fake media.

The Psychology of Deception: Why the Human Brain Believes Manipulated Videos
A key psychological factor behind the effectiveness of deepfakes is something researchers often describe as the “realism heuristic.” Human beings have evolved to trust what they see and hear. For thousands of years, visual perception was one of the most reliable sources of information about the world. Artificially generated video content has disrupted that assumption.
Recent scientific studies suggest that people are far more vulnerable to manipulated media than they believe. Experiments indicate that the average person’s ability to identify a deepfake video correctly is only around 55 percent, which is only slightly better than random guessing.
Another important psychological process occurs after viewers realize they have been deceived. The effect of a deepfake does not end once the manipulation is exposed. Instead, people often begin to doubt other videos and information they encounter afterward. In this way, deepfakes do not merely spread false information; they gradually erode trust in media and even in reality itself.
Experimental research has also shown that even when viewers suspect a video may be manipulated, the content can still damage the reputation of a politician, institution, or public figure. In other words, a deepfake does not have to be perfectly convincing to be effective. It only needs to plant a seed of doubt or provoke a negative emotional response.
This psychological mechanism is sometimes described as the “shadow of doubt effect.” Once suspicion appears in the public consciousness, it can remain there permanently, even after the manipulation has been exposed.
A simple comparison illustrates this phenomenon. Imagine a manipulated video falsely accusing a well-known individual of a serious crime. Even if it is later proven that the accusation was fabricated, the suspicion may linger in public perception for years.

Deepfakes as a New Weapon of Propaganda and Disinformation
Deepfakes have not remained merely a form of online entertainment or digital prank. Over time, they have attracted the attention of far more serious actors.
Political strategists and propagandists quickly recognized the potential of manipulated video content.
During election campaigns, fabricated clips can be used to damage an opponent’s reputation, spread misleading narratives, or amplify propaganda messages.
Even when such videos are eventually exposed as fraudulent, the previously mentioned “shadow of doubt” effect can still influence public opinion. Once a damaging narrative begins circulating online, it can be extremely difficult to erase it.
For this reason, deepfakes are increasingly discussed as a dangerous tool in modern information warfare. Their evolution remains unpredictable, and their potential impact on democratic processes and public trust is still unfolding.

Crime in the Age of Deepfake and Artificial Intelligence
Another group that quickly recognized the advantages of manipulated video technology was the criminal underworld.
In recent years, the internet has been flooded with videos featuring politicians, athletes, or celebrities promising quick wealth, financial freedom, or extraordinary investment returns. In these clips, recognizable public figures appear to encourage viewers to purchase a product or invest money in what seems to be a safe opportunity.
In reality, these are often carefully organized scams designed to extract money from unsuspecting victims.
As the author of this article, I can personally confirm how common these videos have become. I have encountered countless advertisements in which a famous athlete, a government official, a minister, or even a well-known actor appeared to invite me to invest money in a “guaranteed” project promising enormous profits within only a few days.
Over time, I adopted a simple rule that has helped me avoid many risky situations. It is a rule worth repeating to every reader:
"If something looks too good to be true, it usually is."
Fraudsters rarely limit themselves to a single scheme, such as cryptocurrency investments or stock trading. They adapt their strategy to whatever topic seems most appealing to potential victims. For that reason, caution remains essential. In many cases, it is far wiser to walk away from a suspicious opportunity than to risk losing hard-earned savings.
