The Seconds After the Whistle


In the great international football tournaments, the penalty taker eventually reaches a peculiar point at which there is almost nothing left to do. The ball is on the spot. The goalkeeper is on the line. The referee gives the signal. A movement the player has performed thousands of times must now be performed once.

Geir Jordet and colleagues went through video of 366 penalty kicks from World Cups, European Championships and Champions League shootouts, breaking each attempt into small pieces of time: the walk to the spot, placement of the ball, the wait for the referee, the response to the whistle, the run-up. Players who hurried after the referee's signal were more likely to miss. One possibility was visible in the footage itself. Under extreme pressure, some players seemed eager to escape the situation—to get the kick over with. [1]

Earlier work covering 409 kicks from major international tournaments had found something similarly uncomfortable: as the importance of a kick increased, success declined, while differences in player skill and accumulated match fatigue explained less of the variation. The dimensions of the goal had not changed. Neither had the distance to it. What had changed was the situation in which the body had to execute the kick. [2]


Adrenaline in the Blood


A psychological threat can produce a thoroughly physical event. The body's faster stress system recruits sympathetic nerves and the adrenal medulla, increasing the release of norepinephrine and epinephrine. Heart rate and cardiac output rise; blood pressure changes; glucose becomes rapidly available; more blood can be directed toward skeletal muscle. The slower hormonal response involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis follows on another timescale. [3]

These reactions are not intrinsically hostile to performance. A sprinter waiting for the gun has considerable use for a cardiovascular system prepared to move. Pressure can be accompanied by physiological patterns associated with good performance as well as bad ones. In studies of what psychologists call “challenge” and “threat” states, both involve engagement and cardiovascular activation; the pattern differs according to how the performer appraises the demands and available resources. Challenge-like cardiovascular responses have predicted better performance in laboratory tasks, netball shooting and later competitive results among baseball and softball players. [4]

Trouble becomes particularly visible in tasks with little tolerance for unnecessary movement. An anxious body may arrive with greater muscular activity while attention becomes less efficiently organised. In an experiment using golf putting, participants induced into a challenge state putted more accurately than those induced into a threat state; differences appeared in gaze, movement kinematics and muscle activity. The Expert's Dangerous Thought


Skilled movement gradually becomes strange to its owner. The better someone becomes, the less of the action needs to be consciously assembled.

Sian Beilock and Thomas Carr demonstrated this with golfers. Experienced players had poorer explicit memory for the individual components of their putts than novices did, consistent with a skill that had become procedural: the movement could run without each part passing through conscious supervision. Under pressure, that efficiency could become vulnerable when attention returned inward and the performer began consciously controlling a movement normally left alone. [6]

A golfer who ordinarily thinks about the target may suddenly become interested in the position of the wrists. A pianist may notice a finger that has crossed the keyboard correctly for years. The instructions are technically relevant, but their appearance at the wrong moment can interfere with the automatic organisation of the action.

Not every failure follows this route. Anxiety can also pull attention toward threat, consequences, spectators or intrusive thoughts. Reviews of perceptual-motor performance under pressure describe disruption at several levels, including attention, interpretation and physical execution. The familiar instruction to “stop thinking” is therefore too crude. What matters is where attention goes once the situation has made attention unusually expensive. [7]


The Quiet Eye


In movement research, a surprisingly literal measure of composure is the final steady fixation before an action. It is known as the “quiet eye.”

Ten basketball players wearing mobile eye trackers took free throws under conditions designed to produce different levels of anxiety. Under greater pressure, their final fixation became shorter, their gaze shifted among more locations, and their shooting percentage fell. Attention had become busier at precisely the moment when the task benefited from stability. [8]

Golf has produced an even more detailed view. Fifty expert golfers putted in a pressure shootout while researchers tracked their eyes. On the putt each golfer eventually missed, quiet-eye duration was shorter than on earlier successful attempts, with the disruption appearing particularly during and immediately after the stroke had begun. [9]

This fits a broader finding in motor learning. Instructions that direct attention toward the effect of a movement—the flight of a ball, the swing of a club, the intended target—have generally produced better results than instructions that direct attention toward the performer's own limbs. Across years of experiments, external focus has been associated not only with accuracy but with more efficient muscular activity and movement control. [10]


Before the Attempt


The movements immediately before performance can become almost as recognisable as the performance itself: a basketball player's dribbles at the line, a golfer settling behind the ball, the few seconds a tennis player spends preparing to serve.

Pre-performance routines need not be elaborate. Their useful feature is repeatability. A meta-analysis drawing on 112 effect sizes found that routines improved sports performance in both ordinary and pressured conditions, although the routines themselves varied widely. They can include physical preparation, imagery, attentional cues or a brief piece of self-talk. [11]

The routine also gives the performer something familiar to do while the nervous system is behaving differently. It does not require the pulse to return to resting level before action begins. Elite golfers trained to extend their quiet-eye period, for example, still reported strong anxiety during a laboratory pressure test. Yet they preserved their gaze behaviour better than the control group, putted more successfully under pressure and later averaged 1.9 fewer putts per competitive round than before training. [12]

Self-talk can serve a similarly narrow purpose when it is prepared rather than improvised in panic. In one three-week intervention, basketball players developed personal self-talk plans for free throws. When they were later tested after strenuous shuttle running, the self-talk group outperformed players who had practised the same number of free throws without the intervention. [13]


High on the Climbing Wall


Raôul Oudejans and Rob Pijpers found an unusual way of putting pressure into dart practice. Participants threw while standing on a climbing wall. Height supplied the anxiety.

Novices who had trained while experiencing mild anxiety later maintained their accuracy as they moved to more anxiety-provoking heights. Those who had trained only in the comfortable condition deteriorated at the highest level, even though heart rate and perceived effort rose systematically for everyone. [14]

The researchers tried the same principle with experts. Basketball players spent five weeks practising free throws either with or without induced anxiety; expert dart players again used the climbing wall. Only the athletes who had practised with anxiety stopped showing the usual performance decline during the later pressure test. Their anxiety had not vanished. Neither had the elevated heart rate. [15]

Modern reviews now group this kind of work under pressure or acclimatisation training: recreating enough of the competitive demand during practice that performers can learn what their attention and movement feel like there. A 2026 position statement from Exercise and Sports Science Australia similarly emphasises that pressure can either impair or facilitate performance, and recent reviews include simulated-pressure training among the strategies used by athletes who perform well when stakes rise. [16]

Back at the penalty spot, the referee still whistles. The heart may still be considerably faster than it was in training. The crowd has not become quieter, and the kick has not become less important. What can become familiar is everything between the whistle and the strike: the time taken, the place the eyes settle, the cue that occupies attention, the run-up already rehearsed when nobody was watching.
